Vloeibaar worden deze lijmen in gesmolten toestand aangebracht door spuitmonden of rollen. Wanneer de smeltlijm afkoelt, bouwt deze zijn initi\u00eble sterkte op door te stollen. Na de snelle afkoeling veroorzaken watermoleculen uit de omgeving een chemische reactie die ook bekend staat als crosslinking. Na volledige vernetting geven reactieve PUR-smeltlijmen een sterkere hechting dan thermoplastische smeltlijmen. Deze PUR-lijmen bieden een superieure weerstand tegen vocht, hitte en chemicali\u00ebn.
